Newb needs 101 level software install pointer
I've successfully installed TinyMe onto my HD after 4 other Linux variants (Ubuntu, Puppy, Vesa, one I can't remember the name of) failed on my VERY old COMPAQ Armada (we're talking built in floppy old) for a variety of speed/stability reasons.
Anyway, my install seems stable and peppy, but I'm so new to this that I can't seem to figure out how to get the Synaptic package manager thing to work its magic. All I want to do is install a browser (failed, apparently, to grab the Chrome package) so I can stream internet radio into my workshop. The thing is, for the life of me I can't figure out where software is installed, or how to access it once its installed. To net this out, can anyone point me to a very basic step-by-step for how to install and locate/launch new apps in this environment? Looks like lots of great support in this forum, but I don't see the 101 stuff I obviously need. Thanks for any light you can shed. -Matt |

Re: Newb needs 101 level software install pointer
Eww, Synaptic. I'm afraid you've gotten ahold of a very old copy of TinyMe (sounds like TinyMe 2008.1 "Droplet"). I would strongly recommend you not try updating or installing anything with it as it will almost surely break. Since that release, TinyMe has moved to a different base and we've had a couple of alpha and one beta release. A second beta release should be out within a week. I would recommend you keep your eye on DistroWatch for the announcement. :-)
Please check the Release Announcement before reporting any issues! Please read the Usage Rules before posting! Check out the FAQ! |
