Re: TinyMe boots to login screen
Okay, that's odd. Did you skip the keyboard setup when booting up the LiveCD?

Okay, that's odd. Did you skip the keyboard setup when booting up the LiveCD? [/quote]No. I selected the default, which was USA keyboard. I am now repeating the entire installation procedure. Did you find the answer to your question, re: mnt livecd? CAI ENG |

Re: repeat install also failed....
Yup. I made it through to the reboot phase, with cd ejected, and lots of text on the screen as it attempts to boot up from the hard drive, instead of the cdrom.
It is now stuck: The screen has been cleared, and the text message is at the left hand upper corner, looks like DOS, i.e. very old, not graphics, though, I saw a phrase flashing momentarily, just before this current screen, about starting X, with a green "ok" signal. Unity release 2009 (Unity) for i586 Kernel 2.6.31.9-unity0.2.lgc on an i686 / tty1 localhost login: Starting display manager: [OK] (green text) (blinking cursor) again, typing "root" to login, gives "prry", not root. So, that's it, for now.... |

(Aside: are we raising a whole new generation of users who've never seen a text-mode terminal?) Anyway, it turned out that the script that starts X was looking for a default theme (actually /usr/share/slim/themes/default/slim.theme) and was complaining that it couldn't find it. For some reason, the install process had failed to add it, so [tt] # cd /usr/share/slim/themes # ln -s lake default [/tt] did the trick. This was with TinyMe-2010-Acorn-Beta-2.i586.iso .....Ron |

Re: TinyMe boots to login screen
Actually, that theme is intentionally removed before I build the ISO. I'm not sure why it would be looking for the default theme. Did you happen to look at /etc/slim.conf? I thought I set up all the possible SLiM config files to have a list of possible themes. The default theme shouldn't be an option.

rjmx Wrote:(Aside: are we raising a whole new generation of users who've never seen a text-mode terminal?)I wonder if the current generation has forgotten how to feed the horses, and clean up the dirty hay? The saddles could use a little soap as well. Where's my buggy whip? rjmx Wrote:....when I did a hard drive install, TinyMe wouldn't come up in X, and stayed at the console login promptUmmm, no Ron, this is not a typical console login prompt. This is a profound bug. I have no meaningful keyboard entry. I could not type "startx" if my life depended upon it. There is no way to enter a login id, nor a password, because the output from the keyboard is garbage. CAI ENG |

Not used to this new-fangled slim stuff. Interestingly, though, I just looked for it and it's not there. There _is_ an /etc/slim.conf.normal, though. It's dated 2010-01-13 11:15. I'm sure I didn't delete/touch/rename it, since this is the first I've heard of it. Otherwise. slim wouldn't start until I added the "default" symlink. I tried running it manually from the console without the /dev/null redirection, and it complained about the missing default/slim.theme. That's when I thought I'd see what happened if I added it. .....Ron |

Re: TinyMe boots to login screen
Ah, a missing /etc/slim.conf would do it. But that just leads to the question of why it would be missing.
